a city in China, in Kiangsu Province. Population, 650,000 (1970). Wuhsi has a landing on the Grand Canal and a railroad station. It is one of China’s principal textile centers, producing cotton, silk, and woolen fabrics. Other industries include ferrous metallurgy, machine building, the manufacture of chemical products, and food processing, including rice polishing, tea processing, flour milling, and the extraction of vegetable oil. Coal is mined in the area.
