Woomera Range
Woomera Range
an Anglo-Australian missile range located in southern Australia in the vicinity of the city of Woomera. The Woomera Range’s land track passes over 2,000 km of sparsely populated regions of Australia and can be continued, if necessary, 4,400 km into the Indian Ocean. At the Woomera Range experimental launchings are conducted of the English Blue Streak vehicles and the Europe missiles built according to the program of the European Launcher Development Organization, and research missiles are launched into the upper layers of the atmosphere. The range’s primary work is testing military missiles. Almost all British missiles are tested there. The USA and certain other NATO countries also use the Woomera Range.
At Woomera six launch sites have been equipped. More than 200 monitoring and measuring points are located along the tracks of the Woomera Range. Two telemetric systems are functioning. One of them is a 24-channel device with antennas that automatically track the flights of military missiles, and the other is designed to service launchings of vehicles. The Woomera Range has about 6,000 employees, of whom 1,000 are regularly in the launch site areas. The managing agency of the range is the scientific research center for weapons development located in the Australian city of Salis-bury.
