Wood, Devolson

(1832–97) civil engineer, educator, author; born in Smyrna, N.Y. He designed an ore dock in 1866 and invented an air compressor and a steam rock drill. He taught from 1872 to 1897 at Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J. He was the author of works on mechanics, bridge construction, and mathematics.
