a city in the German Democratic Republic in the district of Halle. Population, 26,900 (1969). Wolfen is one of the major centers of the country’s chemical industry with the world famous chemical combine Filmfabrik (14,000 employees) and the chemical plant Farbenfabrik (8,000 employees), which produce materials for cinema and photography (Orwocolor), plastics, dyes, mineral fertilizers, and pharmaceutical products. The city has a steam power plant.
