Born Sept. 27, 1854, in Gross Skal (now Hrubá Skála, Czechoslovak Socialist Republic); died Feb. 17, 1912, in Vienna. Austro-Hungarian political figure and diplomat. Count.
From 1895 to 1898, Aehrenthal was ambassador to Bucharest. He was ambassador to St. Petersburg from 1899 to 1906 and minister of foreign affairs from 1906 to 1912. He was an active proponent of Austro-Hungarian expansionism in the Balkans. Aehrenthal played an important role in preparing Austria-Hungary’s annexation of Bosnia and Hercegovina in 1908.
