On the central western border of MN, south of Fargo, ND; established Mar 8, 1858 from Cass County; name changed from Toombs County to Andy Johnson County in 1863 and from Andy Johnson County to present name Mar 6, 1868. Name Origin: For Col. Alexander Wilkin (1820-64), an officer in the Union army killed at the Battle of Tupelo. Originally for Robert Toombs (1810-85), U.S. senator from GA (1853-61), who became the Confederate secretary of state and thus angered the local residents. Changed to honor the seventeenth U.S. president, Andrew Johnson (1808-75), but his subsequent political stands also angered them
