Wilkes1. Charles. 1798--1877, US explorer of Antarctica 2. John. 1727--97, English politician, who was expelled from the House of Commons and outlawed for writing scurrilous articles about the government. He became a champion of parliamentary reform Wilkes an Australian scientific station in Eastern Antarctica, on Wilkes Land, in the northern part of the Grierson Oasis (66°15’S lat. and 110°32’ E long.). The station was opened in January 1957. Named in honor of C. Wilkes, it belonged to the USA until 1959. It was closed in 1969 and nearby Casey Station replaced it. Aerometeorological, geophysical, glaciological, océanographic, and biological observations were carried out at Wilkes. The station also served as a base for field trips to neighboring areas of Eastern Antarctica.
