a city in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), in the district (Bezirk) of Cottbus, on the Neisse River, near the Polish border. Population, 28,500 (1968). The city is the center of the hat industry in the GDR. The city also has a synthetic fiber combine, textile and shoe industries, and a machine-building industry (equipment for the textile industry and for concrete.plants). It was named in honor of W. Pieck, who was born in the city. Its former name was Guben.
