Wien's Displacement Law
Wien's displacement law[′vēnz di′splās·mənt ‚lȯ] (statistical mechanics) A law for blackbody radiation which states that the wavelength at which the maximum amount of radiation occurs is a constant equal to approximately 2898 times the product of 1 micrometer and 1 kelvin. Also known as displacement law; Wien's radiation law. Wien’s Displacement Law a law that asserts that the length λmax of a wave that receives the most energy in an equilibrium spectrum is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature T of the radiating body: λmax T = b, where b is a constant equal to 0.2897 cnv°K. Wien’s displacement law indicates how the maximum in an energy distribution is displaced within the radiation spectrum of a blackbody in case of a change in temperature. The law was first derived by W. Wien in 1893 on the basis of thermodynamic observations. |
