In western KS, northwest of Garden City; organized Mar 6, 1873 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the Wichita Indians, one of the more important tribes of Caddoan linguistic stock. Name is translated 'man,' or from Choctaw owa chito 'big hunt.'
