Whole Pool Whole PoolThe underlying instrument in a mortgage-backed security representing ownership interest in entire mortgages as opposed to pieces of mortgages. Whole pools are fairly unusual among mortgage-backed securities as they are thought to carry higher risk: if a mortgage goes into default, the holder of the whole pool has little or nothing with which to hedge the investment. However, because they are not divided and re-divided as with other MBSs, whole pools are easier for investors to understand. |
