Size: 139 acres.
Established: Authorized as Whitman National Monument on June 29, 1936; changed to current designation on January 1, 1963.
Location:In southeastern Washington, 7 miles west of Walla Walla on US 12.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Ranger-led programs, cultural demonstrations.
Special Features:The mission of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman at Waiilatpu was an important way station in the early days of the Oregon Trail. The Whitmans labored to bring Christianity to the Cayuse, but deep cultural differences and a measles epidemic led to violence in which the Cayuse killed the Whitmans and 11 others.
