cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).

 across the Hudson River from New York City; settled 1790, inc. 1898. It is a residential town with some light industry, including the manufacture of textiles and clothing. West New York is also a leading U.S. embroidery center. The waterfront, 1 mi (1.6 km) long, can accommodate oceangoing vessels.
