or Western Roman Empire The western section of the Roman Empire, first set apart in ad 286 by Emperor Diocletian, formalized after the death of Theodosius I in 395, and lasting until 476. It comprised Italy, Gaul, the Iberian Peninsula, and much of Britain, Illyria, and northern Africa.
