(west'er-mark), in chest radiography, decreased lung markings from oligemia caused by pulmonary embolism.

Westermark sign

An abrupt radiologic 'cutoff' in pulmonary vessels seen in a standard AP CXR in PE without infarction, often accompanied by dilation of vessels before the cutoff–eg, the right descending pulmonary artery. Cf Hampton sign.

Westermark sign

(wes′tĕr-mark″) An abnormal x-ray finding in pulmonary embolism. It consists of diminished vascular markings distal to the clot in combination with unusually prominent vessels proximal to it.
