[′ver·nə‚kēz in‚sef·ə′läp·ə·thē] (medicine) A disease due to thiamine deficiency, characterized by vomiting, ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, nystagmus, ataxia, weakness, dementia, and hemorrhaging of neurons around the third ventricle, cerebral aqueduct, and mammillary bodies.
