Welsbach mantle

The kind of mantle used in gasoline and propane lanterns to greatly increase the amount of light from the flame. The mantle was originally used with the natural and artificial gaslights of the early 1900s and, for a while after its introduction, was often called the Welsbach mantle from its inventor, Carl von Welsbach.
