Welded Structures

Welded Structures

metal structural components in buildings and other structures, whose elements are joined by welding. Welded structures comprise at present approximately 95 percent of steelwork; those constructed of sheet metal are particularly effective. Welding has a number of advantages over riveting. Up to 25 percent less metal is needed because component cross sections are used more efficiently and connecting elements are of lower weight. Costs are lower because relatively inexpensive equipment is used. In addition, welds offer the advantage of being airtight.
