In 1948 he moved to Italy and, as a writer and European newspaper correspondent, eventually became known in America as a lecturer and opera broadcaster. He won international awards for his English translations of French and Italian operas and modern Italian prose, including Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose (1983). |
