Watson, James Eli

(1864–1948) U.S. representative/senator; born in Winchester, Ind. A lawyer, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., Ind.; 1895–97, 1899–1909) and the Senate (1916–33), becoming majority leader (1929–33). A party loyalist, he supported big business, isolationism, and restrictions on immigration.
