Wasukuma

 

Sukuma, a nationality in the Republic of Tanzania. The Wasukuma live south of Lake Victoria and are closely related to the Nyamwezi. Population, approximately 1 million (1967 estimate). They speak the Kisukuma language, which is related to the Bantu languages. Most of the Wasukuma adhere to local traditional beliefs, but some are Catholics; a small number of Wasukuma profess Islam. Chief occupations are farming and cattle raising; seasonal migratory work in the mines and in the cities has developed.
