Washingtonia

 

a genus of fan-leaved palms. There are two species— W. filifera and W. robusta—both of which are palms with thick trunks up to 25 m high and large crowns. These palms grow in arid regions of southern California, Arizona, and northwestern Mexico. In the USSR they are cultivated in gardens on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus; in other regions they are grown in greenhouses.
