Warsaw Treaty of 1768
Warsaw Treaty of 1768
concluded between Russia and Poland on February 24 (March 6). The government of Catherine II took advantage of the question of equal rights for dissidents (not Catholics, but members of the Orthodox Church and Protestants) to interfere in the internal affairs of Poland. According to the Warsaw Treaty, dissidents gained rights equal to those of Catholics. However, the basic laws of the Rzecz Pospolita (the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania)—serfdom, the election of the king, and the liberum veto—remained untouched. The Warsaw Treaty of 1768 contributed to the further weakening of the country and secured the political domination of tsarism in Poland.
