quantum well infrared photodetector[¦kwänt·əm ‚wel ‚in·frə′red ‚fōd·ō·di′tek·tər] (electronics) A detector of infrared radiation composed of numerous alternating layers of controlled thickness of gallium arsenide and aluminum gallium arsenide; the spectral response of the device can be tailored within broad limits by adjusting the aluminum-to-gallium ratio and the thicknesses of the layers during growth.
