Syrmak

Syrmak

a patterned felt Kazakh rug. The syrmak is made from pieces of felt of various colors, usually black and white, by the mosaic technique: the cutout background design is even with the rug’s surface. This composition is laid on another piece of felt and quilted; the outline of the design is then stitched with colored thread. The syrmak is one of the main decorative articles in the yurt, the traditional Kazakh dwelling.
