Vegetated roof

Vegetated roof

A roof that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and soil, or a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. These roofs reduce heating and cooling loads, reduce the urban heat-island effect, increase roof lifespan, reduce storm-water runoff, filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air, filter pollutants and heavy metals out of rainwater, and increase wildlife habitat in built-up areas. Also referred to as a green roof, eco-roof, or living roof.
