In northeastern AR, northwest of Memphis, TN; organized Feb 28, 1838 from Greene County. Name Origin: For Joel Roberts Poinsett (1779-1851), SC statesman and secretary of war (1837-41). He introduced the cultivation of the poinsettia flower to the U.S., having imported it from Mexico after he was a U.S. minister there (1825-29)
