Po Hsing-Chien
Po Hsing-Chien
(Chih-t’ui). Born circa 770; died circa 816. Chinese author and novelist. Brother of the poet Po Chü-i.
Po came from an ancient but impoverished feudal family. He served in the government. In literature he sided with the “movement for the return to the ancient,” which was led by Han Yü . His most famous works are Story of the Beautiful Li (a reworking of a popular fairy tale) and the short story Three Dreams, in which the author’s brother Po Chü-i and his poet friends Yuan Chen and Li Shao-chih appear. The works of Po Hsing-chien were included in the collection of classical Chinese short stories T’aip’ing kuang chi (tenth century).
