Traveling-Wire Micrometer

(also impersonal micrometer), an auxiliary device used to determine the position of a star in the field of view of certain astronomical instruments, such as a transit instrument, theodolite, or meridian circle. It is a variation of the ocular micrometer, in which the screw is provided with a contact drum connected to the circuit of a chronograph.
