sphe·no·man·dib·u·lar lig·a·ment

[TA] the fibrous band that passes from the spine of the sphenoid bone to the lingula of the mandible; it is a primary passive support of the mandible serving as a "swinging axis," permitting depression and elevation around a transverse axis passing through the two lingulae, while at the same time permitting protraction and retraction. Synonym(s): ligamentum sphenomandibulare [TA]

sphenomandibular ligament

The ligament attached superiorly to the spine of the sphenoid and inferiorly to the lingula of the mandible. The sphenomandibular ligament is a key part of the temporomandibular joint, helps support the weight of the mandible when the mandibular muscles are relaxed, and also controls and guides the swing of the mandible as it moves.
