Makovskii, Vladimir Matveevich

Born July 15 (27), 1870, in Eisk; died Jan. 3, 1941, in Kharkov. Soviet scientist in turbine construction. Member of the CPSU (1940).

Makovskii graduated from the Kharkov Technological Institute in 1894. In 1896 he began working in the Main Steam Engine Works in Kharkov. In 1899 he was exiled to Groznyi for his participation in the revolutionary movement. From 1904 to 1930 he taught at the Ekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk) Mining Institute; in 1930 he began teaching at the Kharkov Mechanical Engineering and Machine-building Institute, where he organized the department of turbine construction in 1932. In 1933 he established the gas turbine laboratory, which developed the design of a stationary gas turbine with a capacity of 736 kW (1,000 hp). The turbine was built in 1940 by the Kharkov Turbogenerator Plant, but its testing was interrupted by the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.
