Podporozhe

a city (since 1956) under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Podporozh’e Raion, Leningrad Oblast, RSFSR. Landing on the Svir’ River, 4 km from the Podporozh’e railroad station on the Leningrad-Petrozavodsk line. Population, 23,000 (1974). The Verkhniaia Svir’ Hydroelectric Power Plant is located at Podporozh’e. The city has a lumbering combine, a machine-repair plant, and plants that produce clothing and reinforced-concrete structural members.
