[1840–50] stri·a·tion (strī-ā′shən) One of a number of parallel lines or grooves on the surface of a rock. Striations form when pieces of rock frozen into the base of a glacier move across the rock and scratch it, or when two blocks of rock along opposite sides of a fault plane slide past each other, scratching the rocks' outer surfaces.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | striation - any of a number of tiny parallel grooves such as: the scratches left by a glacier on rocks or the streaks or ridges in muscle tissuestriagroove, channel - a long narrow furrow cut either by a natural process (such as erosion) or by a tool (as e.g. a groove in a phonograph record) | | 2. | striation - a stripe or stripes of contrasting color; "chromosomes exhibit characteristic bands"; "the black and yellow banding of bees and wasps"banding, stria, bandcollar - (zoology) an encircling band or marking around the neck of any animalstretch mark - a narrow band resulting from tension on the skin (as on abdominal skin after pregnancy)streak, stripe, bar - a narrow marking of a different color or texture from the background; "a green toad with small black stripes or bars"; "may the Stars and Stripes forever wave" | TranslationsstriationenUK
striation1. an arrangement or pattern of striae 2. another word for stria (sense 1)StriationFine, narrow ridges or grooves parallel to each other.Striation any one of the alternating light and dark bands occurring in the positive column of a vacuum tube during electric discharge through a gas. In some cases, the striations are static; in others they move rapidly, usually from the anode to the cathode. The bright and sharp side of each striation faces the cathode. The brightness of the striation, as a rule, diminishes in the direction of the anode. According to recent concepts, the electric field intensity and the temperature and concentration of electrons are great in the head of the striation (from the cathode side). As the electrons move in the process of diffusion from the head of the striation toward the anode, their concentration and temperature fall off to the point where ionization ceases. There is then a new jump in electric potential, and a new striation is formed. REFERENCESNedospasov, A. V. “Straty.” Uspekhi fizicheskikh nauk, 1968, vol. 94, issue 3, pp. 439–62. (geology) One of a series of parallel or subparallel scratches, small furrows, or lines on the surface of a rock or rock fragment; usually inscribed by rock fragments embedded at the base of a moving glacier. (mineralogy) One of a series of parallel, shallow depressions or narrow bands on the cleavage face of a mineral caused either by growth twinning or oscillatory growth of different crystal faces. striationenUK
