Ridge Sands
Ridge Sands
masses of sands forming narrow parallel ridges. Their direction depends on the prevailing winds. They are a few kilometers long; the heights of half-overgrown sand ridges range from 1 to 70 m, and of bare ridges, up to 200 m. The distance between ridges is from tens of m to 2–4 km. They form through the action of wind-current eddies, which arise as a result of the rotation of the earth; another factor in their formation is the unequal heating of slopes of various exposures. Ridge sands are widely distributed in Middle Asia, Australia, and Africa.
