stretch weakness

stretch weakness

A form of positional weakness in which the apparent weakness of a muscle results from prolonged positioning in a lengthened position, thus shifting the muscle length-tension curve to the right. This phenomenon is observed when the force production of the lengthened muscle is limited when it is tested in a relatively short position.

Patient care

Care must be taken in positioning when testing for muscle force production. To assess strength accurately, muscles should be tested in their functional or ideal positions or throughout the entire range of motion.
