po' boy
po'boy or po' boy or po-boy P0392100 (pō′boi′)n. A sandwich originating in New Orleans consisting of meat or seafood, such as roast beef or fried oysters, and often lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments, served on French bread. [Probably from poor + boy (perhaps in reference to the free sandwiches given to striking streetcar workers (considered "poor boys") by the Martin Brothers Coffee Stand during a transit strike in New Orleans in 1929), or perhaps from folk-etymological alteration of French pourboire, pourboire (said to have been used in New Orleans also in the sense "alms given to beggars," and then applied in English to the sandwiches distributed by nuns as alms); see pourboire in Indo-European roots.]po' boy (ˈpəʊˌbɔɪ) or poboyna baguette filled with fried meat or seafood
po' boy
po' boyA traditional sandwich from New Orleans, Louisiana, made with a long roll of French bread and containing a variety of fillings, almost always with some kind of meat or fried seafood. ("Po' boy" being short for "poor boy," supposedly referring to striking workers in 1929 to whom a local restaurant served such sandwiches.) Primarily heard in US. Ever since leaving New Orleans to go to college, I can't stop craving a proper roast beef po' boy from back home. I'm ordering a dozen po' boys for the party, so if you have any food allergies, let me know this afternoon.See also: boypoor boy verbSee submarineSee also: boy, poorThesaurusSeepoor boy |
