Adzhina-Tepe

a hill 12 km east of the city of Kurgan-Tiube, Tadzhik SSR, with the remains of a Buddhist monastery of the sixth to eighth centuries. Excavations have been in progress since 1961. The monastery consists of two rectangular courtyards surrounded by spaces for sanctuaries, cells, passageways, and so on. The stupa, a structure of worship, was located in one of the courtyards. Wall paintings and clay statues, including a 12-meter figure of Buddha on his deathbed, were found at Adzhina-Tepe. Indian elements and the local traditions of ancient Tokharistan were blended together in the architecture and decoration of Adzhina-Tepe.
