On the northwestern border of MS, southwest of Memphis, TN; organized Feb 9, 1836 by the Treaty of Pontotoc from Chickasaw cession of 1832. Name Origin: For a tribe of Tunican linguistic stock located on the lower Yazoo River in MS. Their name probably means 'the people' or 'those who are the people.'
