The Tungabhadra is formed by the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers, which rise in the Western Ghats. Measured from the source of the Bhadra, the river is 710 km long, and it drains an area of 72,200 sq km. The greater part of the Tungabhadra’s course lies in the southern part of the Deccan plateau. The river is fed mainly by rain, and it has a monsoonal regimen with summer high water. The mean flow rate of the Tungabhadra is approximately 650 cu m per sec. Near the city of Hos-pet on the river are a dam more than 2,400 m long and 49 m high, a reservoir approximately 380 sq km in area, a system of canals that irrigates more than 200,000 hectares of land, and a hydroelectric power plant. There is also a large reservoir on the Bhadra River. The city of Kurnool is situated on the Tungabhadra. |
