(strep'tō-mī'sĕ-tā'sē-ē), A family of aerobic gram-positive bacteria (order Actinomycetales) that produce a vegetative mycelium that does not fragment into bacillary or coccoid forms; they produce conidia that are borne on sporophores. These organisms occur primarily in the soil; some are thermophiles found in rotting manure, a few are parasitic, and many produce antibiotics. The type genus is Streptomyces.
