Spencer, Joseph Spencer, Joseph (Earle)(1907–84) geographer; born in Bolivar, Mo. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of California: Berkeley, he spent several years in China. In 1940 he joined the faculty at the University of California: Los Angeles where, with an interruption during World War II, he remained until 1975. With William E. Thomas he wrote Cultural Geography (1969), Asia, East by South (1971), and Introducing Cultural Geography (1973). |
