TOM complex of protein translocators

(tom kom'pleks prō'tēn trans'lō-kā-tŏrz), multisubunit protein complex located in the outer membrane of mitochondria; responsible for transport of mitochondrial proteins, encoded in the nucleus and synthesized in the cytosol, into the intermembrane space and inserting the proper proteins into the outer mitochondrial membrane.
