Rice WeevilRice Weevil(Calandra, or Sitophilus, oryzae), a beetle of the family Curculionidae; a dangerous pest of grain, mainly rice and grain products. The body is 2-3.5 mm long and brown in color. Native to India, the rice weevil spread with rice through the entire globe. In the USSR it does the greatest damage in the Caucasus, Ukraine, and the republics of Middle Asia. The insect usually inhabits warm granaries but is also found in the fields (Caucasus). The rice weevil yields as many as seven generations in a year. Both the adults and the larvae are destructive, feeding on rice, rye, wheat, barley, corn, buckwheat, husked millet, and oats, as well as on products obtained from these grains.
