Singkep

 

an island in the South China Sea, in the Lingga Archipelago, off the eastern coast of Sumatra; part of Indonesia. Area, 828 sq km. Coral reefs fringe the island’s shores. Hills and low mountains, to 475 m in elevation, dominate the interior. The island is composed primarily of granites. Tin ore is mined—in 1972 approximately 1,400 tons. Singkep has tropical evergreen forests. It is noted for several tropical crops and the products derived from them, including sago, gambier (tanning extract), pepper, and copra. Nearby waters yield fish. The city of Singkep is on the island.
