small, circumscribed, bilateral, beadlike enlargements on the free edge of the vocal folds at the junction of the anterior one third and the posterior two thirds caused by misuse or abuse of the voice; often reversible by voice therapy. Synonym(s): singer's nodes, singer's nodules, teacher's nodes

singer's nodes

Small, polyp-like swellings or nodules on the vocal chords resulting from overuse of the voice in an unnatural manner. Singer's nodes cause hoarseness and loss of phonation and must be removed surgically. Vocal training can prevent recurrence.
