PMETB
PMETB
Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board. The non-departmental public body (arm’s length body, quango) which arose from the merger of the Specialist Training Authority of the Medical Royal Colleges (STA) and the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) in 2005, with the aim of creating a single, independent deeming authority responsible for postgraduate medical education and training in the UK. PMETB published generic standards for postgraduate education across all specialties, resulting in consistency and transparency in specialty training of doctors. The PMETB approved curricula for 57 specialties and 33 sub-specialties and developed equivalence routes for specialist (consultant) registration for doctors who had not followed the typical training pathways.PMETB was criticised for having added bureaucracy, suffering communication breakdowns and not regulating specialty training. PMETB merged with the General Medical Council in 2010, so that one body could oversee doctors from the beginning to the end of their careers. Educational regulation and certification of doctors in the UK are now housed under one roof.
