War at Sea
War at Sea
a collective concept that includes the totality of military activity conducted in wartime in all naval theaters. It is widely used in foreign military literature and is some-times used in Soviet literature as well.
The concept of“war at sea,” which makes the fleet the supreme weapon, was formed in the period of sailing ships, when in some wars of the 16th and 17th centuries goals were achieved mainly through the destruction of the enemy fleet. Soviet military science, being opposed to the absolutization of one weapon or one particular armed service, recognizes the decisive significance of individual means of destruction (such as nuclear weapons) in the general arsenal of the means of warfare, individual operations, engagements, and battles. However, it believes that victory over the enemy can be attained only through the joint and coordinated efforts of all the armed services and with the use of a variety of means of warfare.
