Riazan State Regional Electric Power Plant

one of the largest condensation electric power plants in the USSR. Located near the settlement of Novomichurinsk in Riazan’ Oblast, RSFSR, the power plant has a design capacity of 3,600 megawatts (MW). (The first section includes four power units of 300 MW each, and the second section comprises three units of 800 MW each.)

Construction of the power plant began in 1970, and the first three units of 300 MW each went into operation in 1973. The fourth such unit was put into operation a year later. The first section is designed to use as fuel coal from the Moscow Basin, and the second section uses mazut. Water is supplied through a recirculating system; a reservoir on the Pronia River is used both for cooling and storage. The electric power generated is fed through high-voltage transmission lines (220 and 500 kilovolts) into the unified central power system, which is a part of the Integrated Electric Power Grid of the USSR.
