U Kyin U

Born circa 1773 in Shinpaunwe, central Burma; died circa 1838. Burmese dramatist and poet.

U Kyin U is considered one of the founders of Burmese drama. He was the author of several palace plays, primarily on themes from the jatakas; they include Mahaw-thada, Parpahein, and Waythandaya. Despite the traditional and conventional nature of his subject matter, he succeeded in dealing with the sociopolitical aspects of early 19th century Burmese history, for example, feudal strife and the self-interest of court officials. U Kyin U is also known for his songs and poetry.
