 [plum´er vin´sun] a syndrome usually seen in middle-aged women with hypochromic anemia, chiefly characterized by cracks or fissures at the corners of the mouth, painful tongue with atrophy of filiform and later fungiform papillae, and dysphagia due to esophageal stenosis or webs.

Plummer-Vinson syndrome

Difficulty in swallowing from webs of tissue that form across the upper oesophagus, sore tongue, spoon-shaped fingernails (koilonychia) and severe iron-deficiency ANAEMIA. The syndrome mainly affects middle-aged women. Treatment of the anaemia usually resolves the syndrome.
